2012 will be a year of growth and opportunity for the clients of LifeWorks. Don’t get me wrong - the challenges have not abated. Youth unemployment remains at its highest rate. Child abuse and domestic violence are on the rise, while our state and federal resources available to support prevention and aid to victims are under constant threat. Finally, our State’s reduced funding for education has compounded the challenges faced by students who struggle with issues that begin outside the classroom. Still, the resilience and determination of youth and their families abound and inspire, and the hundreds of volunteers, staff, donors and advocates of LifeWorks are there to INVEST in their future 2012 begins with the completion of the Sooch Foundation Youth and Family Resource Center. This 31,000 square foot facility will expand LifeWorks’ service capacity by 25% and leverage critical partnerships with Austin Community College, Capital Idea and the University of Texas School of Social Work. It also launches Phase Two of the development of LifeWorks East Austin Campus. Later this year, we will break ground on The Works, a 45-unit affordable housing complex that will serve homeless youth, young families and youth aging out of care. The close proximity of the Sooch Center, the Works and Austin Community College will create a unique and ground-breaking model for helping youth transition from the most challenging circumstances to self-sufficiency. LifeWorks continues to deepen the range and depth of support in the community. Last year, we launched two new programs – the adolescent pregnancy prevention REAL Talk program, as well as the St. David’s Foundation–funded Shared Psychiatric Services for children. This year, we launch two more – LifeWorks Young Fathers Program and a Workforce Development program focused on youth aging out of foster care. Each resource we offer is an investment in the potential of the courageous youth and families we serve, and we remain both undaunted and honored in continually expanding and improving our service. I thank each of you for your commitment and hard work!
