For the past four years, we have been on a mission to end youth homelessness here in Austin.

More than a dozen LifeWorks clients have moved into their homes since The Works II opened. The Works II is conveniently located on the same property as our Pleasant Valley site, ensuring that access to programs and services is just steps away.

One LifeWorks client, Taylor, just moved into her 1-bedroom apartment at The Works II. Since Taylor has been a LifeWorks client, she has been hired for work by LifeWorks employment partners, enrolled in GED preparation courses – and is just one test away from earning her GED – and has been seeing a Peer Support Specialist.

Since moving in, Taylor says she is less stressed.

“I have more support around me,” she said. “All I must do is walk outside and I’m onsite for services.”

For clients like Taylor, home means safety, stability, comfort and personal space. Julia, a LifeWorks case manager, says housing is a basic human right and a means to growth and opportunity.

“The growth and initiative I’ve seen from Taylor is astounding – between getting a full-time job, enrolling in GED, and learning the ins and outs of how to navigate leasing her first apartment, securing housing at The Works II was the icing on the cake of an unforgettable year for her,” she said.

There will be more than 400 youth like Taylor in need of housing, counseling and education/workforce services provided by LifeWorks in 2021.

Therefore, reaching our goal of $4.9 million by the end of 2020 is critical in allowing us to scale programs to accommodate their needs and ensure that youth homelessness in Austin is rare, brief, and non-recurring.
